Inventive Ways Engineers Improvise in Daily Life

We’ve all been there. You close up that bag of frozen chicken nuggets just to find out it’s not releasable and there’s no chip clip in sight. It’s Christmas eve night and you go to wrap your wife’s present, but where’s that damn wrapping paper? Your favorite coat just ripped again and we all know you don’t sew. When any person with the mind of an engineer gets in a bind, he/she will find a way to improvise, even in the toughest situations. Let me start off by saying that I am NOT an engineer. But my father was, and I am proud to say I picked up my improvisation skills from him! A lot of these problems and solutions have actually been done by either myself or my father.

PROBLEM: Frozen foods didn’t come in a resealable bag.

SOLUTION: Got a clamp? Check out my header picture to see exactly what I’m talking about. Of course, tape works just as well.

PROBLEM: You’re out of wrapping paper and it’s too last minute to go buy some.

SOLUTION: Grab yesterday’s newspaper, or even a paper bag. Tell her you were trying to save money (She’ll love it!)

PROBLEM: You finished off the scotch tape halfway through you’re newspaper wrapping job.

SOLUTION: Staples! Better yet, twist the ends until the present looks like a Tootsie Roll and zip-tie or rubber band them shut.

PROBLEM: Your favorite coat ripped (yet again) and you don’t sew.

SOLUTION: One more of the many uses for staples.

PROBLEM: You’re oven stopped working and you really want that pizza.

SOLUTION: Have a mixing bowl and a hair dryer? I’ll let you engineers figure this one out!

PROBLEM: You had this great idea to hang a dart board in the living room and stuck a dart through the drywall. Hurry! Your wife will be home any minute!

SOLUTION: Depending on the size of the hole, a combination of toilet paper and toothpaste should do the trick.

PROBLEM: You can’t find the audio video cable for your child’s dvd player to hook up to the tv.

SOLUTION: Tin Foil! *Do not attempt this as a replacement for the power cord.*

PROBLEM: The baby swing sucks the juice out of those C batteries weekly.

SOLUTION: All it takes is a light switch, a phone charger, some solder, heatshrink tubing, and some glue and you can make that swing ac powered in a few hours.
